To launch our News Page, we thought it would be nice if we let you into a few SMVA secrets.
Get ready to find out 10 things you wouldn’t ordinarily know about us:
- Did you know SVM Associates dates back to 1946? Sean Mulcahy joined Niels Steensen and Jorgen Varming to form the original SVM and our journey began.
- Believe it or not, our Company ancestors were once the chosen consultants for the Sydney Opera House. We’d love to work on that building again!
- If you combine all of the time our Lift & Escalators team have spent in our industry it adds up to over 150 years of specialised experience (that’s a lot of ‘ups and downs’!).
- Our Birmingham office has a supporter of every football team in the West Midlands so there’s plenty of friendly (& occasionally more intense) banter and local derbies!
- Talking of our Birmingham office, the Calthorpe estate dates back to 1717 and used to be home to famous Brummies like the Cadbury and Chamberlain families.
- Collectively, as a business, we have over 30 children ranging in age from 5 months to 40 (well officially next week). So you could say, we’re an intergenerational Company.
- Before we arrived at SVMA, we had former lives as locomotive engineers, night club bouncers, crane and steelworkers, a sailing instructor and a bomb disposal diver!
- The oldest building we work at is Trinity College in Dublin (1592). We acted as consultants for a lift installation in the Library that actually houses the ‘Book of Kells’. The newest has some of the fastest lifts in Europe which will take you to the highest view in London – the lift’s permanent art installations will make the 50+ storey journey fly by.
- We don’t want to name drop, but we have met Kylie Minogue, Phil Collins and Paul Weller whilst working on lifts (but not all at the same time!)
- Our MEP department recently installed a chiller that has saved 177,000kg CO2e carbon commissions (this is the equivalent of driving your average diesel car over a million miles).
