Principal Designer

The Roleof Designer

Virtually everyone involved in a construction project has legal duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015).

Under these regulations, anyone who has construction work carried out as part of their business is the ‘client’.  On a daily basis, the role that we fulfil, under the terms of the regulations, is as the ‘designer’. As part of this role, we eliminate, reduce or control foreseeable risks that may arise during construction work, or in the use and maintenance of the building once built.  This approach is commonplace for us in any project, whether it is a single plant item replacement project, through to multi-million-pound developments.

On projects where there is likely to be more than one contractor engaged on a project, then the client will need to appoint a Principal Designer.

Principal Designers are critical to the successful management of health and safety risks during the pre-construction phase of the project.

They have a significant influence on the way a project will be delivered to secure the health and safety of everyone affected – before work, during work and in the future.

Lifetime Experienceand Qualifications

On projects which only involve building engineering services, or if the services contribute to a large proportion of the overall construction project, then we are often engaged by the client as Principal Designers.

The combination of lifetime experience and qualifications within the industry with appropriate NEBOSH qualifications makes us uniquely competent in undertaking this role for our clients.

Our ability to recognise and identify the risks specific to building services projects is what makes us stand out from many of the more general practitioners.

It is often the case that we are appointed as both a designer and the Principal Designer on projects. In these circumstances, we make a point of selecting an individual senior engineer (who is not directly involved in the design) to lead as Principal Designer.

Our preferred practice has been successfully deployed on recent projects, such as the plant installation at Siemens Train Depots, chiller replacement at 85 Tottenham Court Road and many more significant projects.

The health and safety of everyone connected to the project is our priority.  By keeping this at the forefront of our minds, we possess a 100% clean sheet safety record for all of our clients and the programmes we have been involved with. We work hard to maintain this record consistently.
