In our industry, there is always a question that we need to consider in any project; Lift Modernisation or Lift Replacement?
In his latest article, Colin Craney evaluates how societal change, technological developments and legislative developments, like the 1974 Health & Safety At Work Act, have influenced lift modernisations and our decision making.
“When I entered the industry back in the 1970s, modernisation formed a significant element of industry activity, whereas complete replacement was comparatively rare, both at the time and when compared to today’s level. When complete replacement arose, this more often related to the replacement of lifts equipped with manually operated doors with lifts incorporating modern automatic door operation. I also recall a significant number of modernisations that introduced automatic door operation and other features whilst retaining the original lift car structure. The incentive to modernise and the associated marketing strategies related to the promotion of performance improvements.”
