He traces how the industry has shifted from complex, bespoke mechanical gearworks to streamlined, cost-effective designs and asks whether this evolution has come at the expense of performance and innovation.
Colin observes:
“Design has consolidated upon the linear belt drive due to its relative simplicity and low cost … it may though be argued that the approach … has reduced performance levels relative to those provided by traditional designs.”
Throughout the article, Colin assesses not just where door-system design has been, but also where it must go, especially in light of safety standards like EN 81‑20, which introduce non-contact detection for door-closing movement.
The article is a thoughtful call to action for original equipment manufacturers, building-services consultants and lift-system specifiers to avoid complacency in what may seem like a maturing market.
